Some eleven years after a group of advocates started campaigning for the construction of this project, it was finally completed in December 2020. The final stage comprised:
- Widening of the footpath on the Middleborough Rd rail bridge to accommodate the shared path;
- Construction of a separated path through laburnum Park;
- Installation of a signalised crossing of Laburnum Street adjacent to the railway bridge; and
- Construction of a separated path along main Street between Laburnum Street and South Parade.
See project page for more information

The bike path between Laburnum st and Middleborough road was never finished. Problem was Vic roads never remade the asphalt section. It is breaking up . It is narrow. Used by many pedestrians as main path for Students. Vic roads still has jurisdiction over part of this path as Hillside crescent actually goes through to middleborough rd. They never maintain the path and garden. this has been done by locals who have now abandoned it. It looks terrible. Problem is Council assumes land north of path to be Railways. Railways say they are responsible for inside of wire fence. Vicroads has respensibility for the part between Hillside crs and Middleborough. Nothing gets done. Who is responsible? Look at the govt survey maps which show that railways when making Laburnum station did not care about boundaries.
Problems are that bicycle riders think it is only a path for them. An off duty policeman had to separate a cyclist & pedestrian over who has right of way. The bikes travel too fast.
No the path was not completed to Vic roads standards but a standard that used existing infrastructure. Who allowed the bike path along Laburnum street. Only good for experienced cyclists.
